Introduction / History

The Ngad'a people live in Ngada Regency, located in the central highlands of Flores Island, East Nusa Tenggara Province. Their language, Ngad'a, belongs to the Austronesian family and is part of the Sumba-Flores subgroup. Historically, the Ngad'a trace their roots to the indigenous inhabitants of Flores and claim ancestral ties to migrations from Java. Their society developed around clan-based structures and megalithic traditions, which are still visible in villages like Bena, known for its stone monuments and ancestral shrines. Colonial contact introduced wet-rice farming and Christianity, while traditional customs such as clan endogamy and matrilineal inheritance remain strong.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Ngad'a live in villages organized by clan territories, with houses built on wooden piles and arranged around central courtyards featuring megalithic stones. Agriculture is the main occupation, with families cultivating rice, corn, millet, and vegetables. Livestock raising and weaving are common, and traditional crafts such as ikat textiles are highly valued. Family life is structured around matrilineal inheritance, and marriage often occurs within clans, reinforcing social cohesion. Celebrations include the Reba festival, held annually to mark the new year and express gratitude to ancestors. This event combines traditional dances, communal meals of sweet potatoes, and Catholic mass, reflecting the fusion of old customs with Christian faith. Daily meals consist of rice, maize, vegetables, and occasional meat during festive occasions.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Ngad'a people primarily identify as Roman Catholic, a faith introduced by missionaries in the early 20th century. Church life is central to the community, and Catholic rituals are integrated into cultural events such as the Reba festival. Despite this, traditional beliefs persist, including reverence for ancestral spirits and sacred sites like Mount Inerie, which is considered the dwelling place of a protective deity. These customs coexist with Christian practices, creating a unique blend of faith and tradition.

What Are Their Needs?

Healthcare and education remain limited in rural areas, leaving families vulnerable to preventable diseases and illiteracy. Economic opportunities are scarce, and many households rely on subsistence farming without access to modern tools or techniques. Spiritually, while Christianity is widespread, there is a need for deeper discipleship and biblical teaching to strengthen faith and encourage mission involvement. Resources such as Scripture in the Ngad'a language, audio recordings, and culturally relevant teaching materials would help believers grow and share the gospel effectively.

Prayer Items

Pray for the Ngad'a people to develop a strong understanding of God's word and for their faith to transform families and communities.
Ask God to raise up local leaders who can disciple others and lead churches with wisdom and humility.
Pray for improved healthcare, clean water, and educational opportunities for children in remote villages.
Intercede for the completion of Bible translation and the creation of gospel resources in the Ngad'a language and pray that believers will be mobilized to reach neighboring groups and participate in global missions.
